I think we had some nervousness that the trip would not live up to our high expectations but it is fair to say that it far exceeded those expectations and we all really enjoyed every moment.

Both Gerald and Jombi were brilliant. In particular, Jombi was not only a pleasure to share time with but he was a constant source of interesting and useful information. We also came to really value his ability to get to the right place at the right time: I am thinking in particular of our encounter with the marsh lions at Ndutu when the pride reunited with their hidden cubs, which was very special and one of the highlights of our trip, and finding the best spot from which to watch the wildebeest crossing after a crazy drive from the camp first thing in the morning; we made it with about five minutes to spare! We had a lot of laughs with both of them. Gerald was very entertaining and had a really good knowledge of local birds which is a particular interest of mine.

Our safari was wonderful with Joshua. He was so knowledgeable about all the wild life and we could feel how passionate he felt about his work. Being without my husband, I loved how he made us feel like we were taken care of. He organized our days, briefing us on the next day’s plan. He also was flexible when we needed a break when my son wasn’t feeling well. We certainly felt like he was a part of our family by the end of the trip.

The next time we go, I’d defiantly spend more time in specific places. I loved the tented experience very much… it was incredible to be that close to the animals. All the lodges were wonderful, you did a wonderful job planning out our stays. My husband is now interested in going back to Africa after showing him all our photos and sharing our stories. Once he retires we will definitely be coming to NZ and Africa through your company.

I just wanted to say a personal thank you for orchestrating, and delivering, such a fantastic safari experience for Family Sell. I think that both of the family “newbies” independently, and publicly, expressed the view that this was the best holiday they’d ever had; and Cameron and Georgie said the same thing on the journey back. We’ve been on some pretty spectacular family holidays in the past, I can tell you – so that’s some accolade!!

Also I would like to thank you for the really lovely words you spoke on the last night at Crater Lodge, which very nearly brought tears to you and me!! Nigel, I would like to say that you personally make a huge contribution to our safari experiences. Your endless knowledge and enthusiasm have a massive impact on your guests, and are a major part of the safari experience.

I’m sure you get this feedback all the time from your other guests, but I don’t think I’ve ever said it to you...out loud...and I’ve decided it’s about time I did!!

REVIEW

I’ve travelled to countries all over the world, but my No. 1 favourite trip is a safari in Tanzania with Nigel Perks and his partners there. I think Tanzania is far and away Africa’s best safari country, with its vast wilderness and concentration of game, and I love Nigel and his safaris so much that I go at least once a year and invite lots of friends. The universal response from my world-travelling friends is “trip of a lifetime” and “best trip I’ve ever had”.

Our itineraries routinely include the Ngorongoro Crater, Manyara, Tarangire, and especially many fabulous areas of the Serengeti, though Nigel also guides in the other national parks of Tanzania. We always see the Big Five, of course – more like the Big Hundred – and the scenery in all these parks is breathtaking. The safari begins long before I arrive with lots of information from Nigel as he helps me plan the itinerary, and then the fun really begins from the moment he picks us up at the airport.

Nigel is truly miraculous as a guide, tracker, and spotter, and his detailed knowledge of the animals, the terrain, and the culture and history of the country and the people is unending. He combines this skill with an irrepressible and hilarious sense of humour that keeps us jolly from morning to night on the game drives and in the lodges and camps. If there is an animal to be seen, Nigel finds it and helps us understand it and it's behaviour, and he gets the best positions for terrific photos while respecting the animals.

Nigel’s own history and the people he has worked within Tanzania are astounding, and I wish he would write a book with photos about all of it. Fascinating to hear. Nigel has introduced my friends and me to wonderful lodges and tent camps, always beautiful, and we usually have the opportunity to mingle with the proud traditional Maasai. Depending on the number of friends who go with me, in Tanzania Nigel partners with Jombi Kivuyo, PaulPanga, and Colin McConnell of Amazing Tanzania, all of whom share Nigel’s skill, knowledge, and humour as guides. I love hearing the life stories of all of them. They provide unbeatable value and can plan an itinerary that suits both passions and budgets. They are the best of the best!

Book at least a year ahead with Nigel, if you can!

Two friends and I also travelled all over the South Island of New Zealand with Nigel, and again his skills and knowledge as a guide made the trip outstanding. He suggested January, and it was an ideal time. We saw the magnificent scenery of NZ in all its glory, but also Nigel arranged so many fun activities – swimming with the dolphins in Kaikoura; wine tasting around Marlborough and Nelson; picnicking, sea kayaking, and swimming at Nelson TasmanPark; hiking in the rain forest and along the northwest coast; climbing on the glaciers; flying over the Marlborough Sound (rain cancelled the boat tour); and touring Christchurch, Queenstown, and Nelson, to name a few. He found wonderfully charming and beautiful places for us to stay and dine and even had the patience to take us shopping in the cities. We had a fabulous time, thanks to Nigel, and all of us want to go back for more.
